Playing at “The Barn”
WELCOME!
Thank you for expressing interest in playing Pickleball – the fastest growing sport in America! It’s great for players of all ages. It’s easy to learn but takes practice to master. Fortunately, there are a lot of places to play, and you can find players at your skill level who can help you hone your skills. It’s also a GREAT way to meet new friends and socialize.
PLAYING AT THE PICKLEBARN
If you’re an experienced player, then all you need to do is sign up for one of our open play sessions. We offer sessions at all levels and include opportunities to play mixed, men’s or women’s doubles. If you want to work on specific skills, I also hold some SkilzNDrilz clinics that people at any skill level can attend to work on specific pickleball skills and strategies.
If you’re new to pickleball, then we offer a course for beginners that consists of three 2-hour, hands-on learning and playing sessions. We’ll have at least one beginner’s class every month and two in most months (one weekday, one weekend). You’ll be learning with other beginners in a private, air-conditioned facility. I have found that many people are reluctant to learn the game because they are embarrassed when first learning on a public court with other experienced players around. So, I offer this course to teach you the basics and you’ll be able to play with other beginners and hold your own after the three sessions.
Once you’ve completed the course, you can look for “Open Play” nights that are designed for beginners so you can play with others who’ve taken the class (even if it wasn’t your class) and get better. Once you’re feeling confident, you can start playing with more experienced players. You’ll find that everyone here is patient and accommodating with new players. We all want you to get better and keep playing!
There’s never a charge at the PickleBarn for Heritage Lake owners. All beginner classes at the PickleBarn are limited to 6 participants (plus a coach) and you MUST RSVP to hold your spot.
HOW DO I SIGN UP?
There are two things you need to do in order to be able to schedule a class or an open play session:
First
Go online and fill out the liability waiver. The waiver is good for the calendar year and will need to be re-signed each January. You can find the form here: https://forms.thepicklebarn.net/waiver
Second
Go the app store on your phone and download an app called Heja. Heja is scheduling software that's FREE to use for all participants. The PickleBarn has a subscription with Heja that allows us to manage the clinics and set a limit on the number of people who attend. If you sign up for Heja at the PickleBarn but don’t have a waiver then the system will remove you automatically. Please sign the waiver before you activate Heja.
HOW DO I RESERVE A SPOT TO PLAY?
There are NO CHARGES for using Heja or for attending the classes. Once you download the Heja App on your phone, you'll be asked to provide a "Team code". The PickleBarn Team Code is "DP-721484." Open the app and enter the code to join our team. Across the bottom you'll see a menu. Pick "Schedule" and you can sign up from there. Each person using Heja will need to install the app on their phone.
You can also add other local PickleBall groups who also use Heja. You can sign up to attend their open play dates and events just by entering their Team code.
For example, when you're ready to start playing regularly with other folks:
- There's a HEJA code for Heritage Lake Pickleball players. There's no charge for being in the Heritage Lake Group but we only give out the Heritage Lake Heja code for people who live in Heritage Lake. The Heritage Lake group plays primarily in the Summer on Wednesday and Saturday.
- There's a HEJA code for the Putnam Pickleball Players club (PPP). Membership in PPP is $25/person or $30/family. They play in Greencastle at Robe Add Park on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday during the Summer from 6-9. The courts there are reserved for PPP members only. In the winter they play at DePauw 2 days a week in the morning (9-11). The group there is larger and there are more special events run by that group.
So, downloading the free HEJA app lets you sign up for my classes, clinics and open play as well as open play with Heritage Lake AND with PPP (if you join - which I strongly recommend!)
Let me know if you have any questions. Hope to see you soon at The PickleBarn!
